Personal Development
Personal Development covers the recommended elements for PSHE (Personal, Social, Health Education) and elements of citizenship that are not covered elsewhere in the curriculum.
Personal Development is a timetabled lesson delivered once per week by mentors. Other elements of the curriculum are covered through a series of drop-down days (tailored specifically for each year group) throughout the year.
Some of the themes covered are:
- Health and well-being: Lessons on healthy eating, first aid, road safety, body image, drugs and alcohol and sexual health.
- Financial capability: Lessons on money management, bank accounts etc.
- Citizenship: Lessons on enterprise, creating a small business and raising money.
- Careers: There is an intensive programme for careers helping you to make the important decisions for post-16 options. There is one-to-one advice from qualified careers advisors outside of the school who advise you on all of the different avenues you can take, as well as a follow-up mock interview appointment with your mentor. In our careers modules, there is also CV and personal statement writing, as well as embedded use of Unifrog in order to tailor careers advice specifically to you. Work Experience is also a vital part of our careers programme and can be included on your personal curriculum vitae.
- Relationships: Students are provided with a range of opportunities to explore real life situations that they may be faced with.
Along with mentors, a number of outside providers are used, charities and theatre groups to make the presentation of Personal Development and Careers as exciting and current as possible. The school responds where appropriate to topical issues or concerns we have in school.
