Welcome to Geography

The study of geography at The Garibaldi School is based around developing a considered in-depth understanding of the world in which we live and grow. The seven-year journey is underpinned at all stages by key geographical concepts and skills that are needed to be successful and are constantly built upon geographical knowledge developed through key stage one and two, and developed by a curriculum that enables students to leave The Garibaldi School as well rounded geographers regardless of the key stage they left their geographical education. Further to this, the study of Geography will develop powerful knowledge and complex transferable skills enabling students to make links to other subject’s areas and experience success in both their academic and future professional lives.

Year 10 & 12 Geography Field Trip to the Holderness Coast

Each year our geography students embark on a Geography Field Trip to the Holderness Coast. On Monday 14th July 2025, Year 10 and Year 12 Geography students embarked on a field trip to the Holderness Coast as part of their GCSE and A-Level studies.

This year the first stop was Flamborough Head, where students explored key coastal processes such as erosion, mass movement, and weathering. They examined how these forces shape dramatic landforms including headlands, caves, arches, stacks, stumps, wave cut notches, and wave cut platforms. And a bonus was the seal spotting!

Next, at Mappleton, students investigated the question: "How does coastal management affect physical processes at Mappleton?" Using a range of fieldwork equipment—including clinometers, ranging poles, tape measures, rulers, and quadrats—they collected data for beach profiles, sediment size, and groyne effectiveness. This data will be analysed further back in the classroom.

The final destination was Withernsea, where the focus was on hard engineering strategies. Students observed how sea walls, rip rap, and groynes are used to combat coastal erosion and protect the town’s infrastructure.

To round off the day, there was just enough time to enjoy some traditional fish and chips and icecreams on the beach!

The trip is a valuable and enjoyable experience for both students and staff, bringing classroom theory to life through real world exploration.
