Welcome to the Sixth Form news bulletin
It’s been a busy couple of weeks for Year 13 as they have worked tirelessly through their mock exams. The way they have prepared and responded has been very impressive and we are sure that the mock grades will reflect this. Mr Brennan’s message to the students is ‘if however your grades are not what you need for your next steps then it’s time for some resilience and focus in terms of making improvements in the February mock exam series, which will be around sooner than you realise. It’s important to know that revision shouldn’t stop at the end of the mock exams, but should continue as a weekly process through to the final exams next summer. These mocks are the foundations of your success – it’s time to build on them!’
For Year 12 it was another successful week as they continue to settle in to life in Sixth Form. Alongside their lessons they took part in a PSCHE session with Mr Brennan and Miss Hadley based on ‘Outstanding Attitudes to Learning in Sixth Form’. It was a really student led session and by the end of it they could articulate what an outstanding sixth former looked like and then reflect on this and set themselves targets in terms of what they needed to do to move from ‘good’ to ‘outstanding’. The sixth form team are compiling the student’s thoughts and will share these in the next newsletter.
Outside of lessons we have a number of students who deserve recognition this week. Some of our Year 12 students including Tara, Holly, Phoebe and Ashley have teamed up with children in Year 1 and Year 2 as part of the reading buddy programme linked with John T Rice Infant & Nursery School. This allows our students to support our local community and provide some more 1:1 reading time with a number of younger and potential future stars of The Garibaldi School. This week they discussed the book chosen and talked together about what this would be about. Then they supported the children to read the book, encouraging the children to use their phonic skills. They also asked the children questions to help with their comprehension. The students are going to work with the same children every week so that they develop a "buddy" relationship. The children at John T Rice enjoyed this quality time and are looking forward to their visit next week when we will have two more of our students helping out. We are proud of all these students as they embrace the wider life of sixth form at Garibaldi.
We also had three of our Year 13 Finance students meet with Sean Andrews, the Financial Capability Relationship Manager for the London Institute for Banking and Finance (Central England and surrounding areas). Charlie, Aaron and Ryan were all awarded a certificate for achieving an A grade in their Certificate in Financial Studies. The students are also eligible to receive a scholarship £500 should they meet the criteria and apply to study one of their degree programmes via UCAS, receive an offer and meet the offer conditions and confirm their place. Well done boys!
Finally, Mr Brennan and Miss Hadley would like to extend our praise to all our sixth formers this week. It’s been another busy one but your efforts do not go unnoticed! Enjoy the weekend!
